After Care:

With great power comes a few responsibilities.
Today, that responsibility is caring for sex toys, something we have a great passion for.
Let’s deal with the niceties first:

Storage:

The best solution here is an inconspicuous box with enough room to space out all your toys away from the prying eyes of others.
The golden rule here is:  keep them separated.
If you don’t have access to space where you can keep toys apart from one another  I would recommend keeping any plastic packaging that the toy comes in to use to keep the toy away from exposure to any other materials that cause chemical reactions and ultimately the degradation of your toy.
You can also use individual plastic resealable bags to segregate and protect them from their fellow Plastic / Rubber companions.

Batteries:

Power makes magic happen with some of our toys. So, how do we make sure they hold strong when we need them most?

Lithium-Ion (Rechargeable):

These batteries lose charge over time.  In an ideal world having these on charge 24/7 would be perfect, but wholly unrealistic unless you use them constantly.  In which case, lucky you!

Try to keep your rechargeable toys charged up weekly or bi-weekly to ensure long battery life.
When rechargeable batteries are left out of power they lose their ability to store charge and in turn, their ability to simulates you in all the right places.
Nothing is more of a mood killer than picking up a dead vibrating dildo in the heat of things.
Keep your rechargeables ready to play and they’ll treat you right with a long life.

Alkaline:

If you have moved onto a new toy do not leave batteries in your old toys as other time these can corrode and even leak potentially damaging your product as well as leaving a mess.  The hazardous kind, not the pleasant kind.

Hygiene:

You wash your hands after you go to the toilet. Right?
The same logic applies to using sex toys.  Always wash after use, and before as well if possible.

Clean prior to use:

First thing’s first.  When you receive a toy from Love Kosova (or any vendor for that matter) you should wash it.

Waterproof:

Always check the product documentation prior to cleaning.  Some products may not be fully submersible in water.  Always check the description and wash accordingly.

What if you don’t:

Let’s face it.  Nobody want’s a smelly dildo in their draws.  It’s gross.
It’s incredibly important to be vigilant around the hygiene of sex toys and even hygiene around sex generally. Uncleaned toys can transmit sexually transmitted infections (STI)s and event cause urinary tract infections (UTI)s which are particularly unpleasant.
It’s not the best sales pitch I’ve made for sex toys but these are the realities of what happens if you put an unclean surface (rubber or real) near your most intimate areas.

In Practice:

If a toy is being used between partners in a single session you must be extra vigilant as you could risk transmitting unwanted bacteria between you and your partner, which could yield unpleasant results.
Additionally, if you are using a toy both vaginally and anally in a signal session this also poses a risk.
Essentially both the vagina and anus have different bacterias and pathogens which are quite accustomed to their regular homes but cause issues outside, usually in the form of a UTI.
I hope it goes without saying but if a sex toy is being inserted both vaginally and anally then it needs to be washed in between.
A quicker, safer workaround could be:
  • Use different toys for different purposes.
  • Use condoms on sex toys and simply replace when usage conditions change.

Materials:

Sex toys can be crudely divided into two types of materials:
  • Porus
  • Non-Porus

Why am I raising this up now?  Because this will have a significant effect on the way you clean these toys.
A quick reminder:
Porus surfaces have holes in and (you guessed it) Non-porous surfaces don’t and are considered “Hard surfaces”.
Porus surfaces are harder to clean than their Non-porous counterparts.  This should be taken into consideration when purchasing a toy.
Love Kosova stock a selection of easy to clean “Medical Grade” Silicone Vibrators and Dildos which can be easily cleaned.

Cleaning:

Different materials require different cleaning regimes.  Regardless, please check if your toy is waterproof prior to cleaning and treat accordingly.
If your toy has removable batteries remove these prior to cleaning.
Silicone cleaners or lubricants, when applied to a Silicone toy, is a mistake that should be avoided as it can damage the texture of Silicone toys.  For this reason, Love Kosova only sells water-based cleaners.
Although not strictly required, cleaners are convenient but a PH Neutral soap can suffice.  Avoid fragranced soaps and those containing any irritants such as Triclosan.  Always read the ingredients label.
Be careful not to overdo it with soap as suds can persist on some surfaces and damage the texture.

Material: Method:
ABS, Acrylic, Latex Lukewarm water rinsed or applied with a damp washcloth (if it has electrical components)
PVC Lukewarm water rinsed or applied with a damp washcloth.  Wipe detergent residue off prior to drying.
Additional cleaning solutions can be purchased to help preserve the material and offer additional gloss.
Silicone These can be cleaned using a rinse or wipe solution.
If these toys don’t have electrical components they can also be boiled for a couple of minutes.
TPE/TPR Some products may require treatment using specific powered substances.
If you have a product made of these materials please exercise additional care and follow aftercare instructions.

After cleaning, place the toy and a drying rack for a few hours, by which time it should be ready to use once again.

Lastly:

This is a broad guide that acts mainly as signposting to good best practice.  This guide does not substitute guidance offered in the product’s instruction/aftercare manual.  This should always be your first port of call when cleaning your sex toys.
In addition, this article does not substitute the advice of a medical physician. You should always consult your sexual health practitioner for guidance regarding your sexual health.
As mentioned: for extra peace of mind, always use a condom.
